With the announcement that sporting events were banned in France until September, the 2019-2020 Ligue 1 season came to an end for their football league and left us wondering what might have been. PSG is the champion, Marseille and Rennes also locked up a spot in the Champions League, with Lille, Reims and Nice also landing in the Europa League.
But I was wondering what might have happened had they been able to play out. Using data provided by Data Sports Group and the models I built for the Champions League Predictions using DataRobot's AI platform, I simulated the cancelled games 10,000 times. What would have happened?
PSG still won Ligue 1 and ran away with the title. The qualifiers for the Champions League remained the same with Marseille still finishing second and Rennes finishing third, but only by a point over Lille. The Europa League was quite different though with Lyon and Montpellier nudging out Reims and Nice for the group stage and qualification spots respectively by a single point over Reims and Angers with Nice falling two points back.
