The Summer Olympics returns to Paris this year after a hundred years. In 1924, the French Capital hosted the Olympic Games with 22 sports. This year in Paris athletes will be competing in over thirty-two games where one would be making its debut. People all over the world would see the most well-known athletes in action once more like Simone Biles and Steph Curry. Let the 2024 Summer Olympics begin!
The main question you might ask is when these games are taking place.
The 2024 Summer Olympics are taking place in Paris this year and will start officially on the 26th of July, while some of the games will kick off in a few days earlier. The Opening Ceremony will happen outside of the stadium for the first time in the history of the Summer Games this year where a flotilla of boats will carry the athletes from all over the world and start off their parade along the Seine River. The river has a rich history in France and passes through the center of the city, the Games’s opening ceremony would be open to the world.
The world’s most awaited athletic event will go on till the 11th of August. A total of 10,500 competitors will be participating in Paris and for the first time ever IOC has claimed that the Games will have an equal number of males and females representing over 206 nations.
Where are the different games taking place?
The majority of the Summer Olympics 2024 will take place in or around Paris, however not all of them will. Ten of the 35 designated locations, including Nice, Marseille, and Bordeaux in France, are located outside of the host metro region. On the waves of the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, 10,000 miles away, the surfing competition will be held.
In an effort to support sustainability this year, the venues have also been chosen with great care. The Athletes' Village is constructed on a previous industrial wasteland site. Many eco-friendly temporary structures have been built as well to reduce the carbon footprint. Stade de France which is the home stadium of the French national soccer team will be used for athletic events and even the closing ceremony will take place there itself. The Paris 2024 organizers have stood strong on their commitment to sustainability. Just one permanent competition facility has been created for the event which is the Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis.
The Seine had been off-limits to swimming for over a century because of continuous pollution now the river is opened for the swimming portions of the Olympic and Paralympic triathlons. This ambitious plan has been argued by many. However, officials have conceded that if the water quality is still too low, swimming activities scheduled for the river may need to be canceled or postponed, even after a thorough and costly cleansing operation.
Break Dancing makes it Olympic Debut
Four new sports to the Olympics, breaking, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing, will be included in the 2024 Paris Games. The last three activities will be competing in their second Olympic cycle, with breaking aka break dance making its Olympic debut this year. The inclusion of these extra sports was approved by the International Olympic Committee on the grounds that they “contribute to making the Olympic Games program more gender-balanced, more youthful and more urban.” Which serves well with this Olympic Games motto: “Games Wide Open” or “Ouvrons large les Jeux” in French. The motto represents the idea of delivering more responsible, inclusive, equitable, and spectacular games.
Team USA or Team China which country will get the most medals?
In the Summer Olympics over the years, two countries have continued to dominate the medal table- China and USA. Who will lead the table this year? Although it is anticipated that Team USA will take home the most medals, it will be their eighth consecutive summer at the top of the standings. Out of the 339 medals up for grabs in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the team brought home 113. Even so, they took home the most gold medals—39. China is expected to take home 90 estimated medals. Great Britain is expected to finish in third place with an expected 62 medals. It is anticipated that France, the current host country, will win 55 medals, about twice as many as it won in Tokyo. 93 nations won at least one medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, while 65 countries brought home at least one gold medal.
